Checks
6 activities · 6 people · 28 assignments
Every activity has exactly one person accountable and at least one responsible. Nothing to fix.
How it works
- 1List the activities down the left and the people or roles across the top.
- 2Click a cell to cycle through blank, R, A, C and I. Right-click clears it.
- 3The checks below run as you type: every activity needs exactly one person accountable and at least one responsible.
- 4Export as Excel — the matrix, the key and the list of findings each go on their own sheet.
Common questions
- What do the four letters mean?
- Responsible does the work. Accountable answers for the outcome and there can only be one. Consulted gives input before the work happens, which is a two-way conversation. Informed is told afterwards, which is one-way.
- Why can only one person be accountable?
- Because accountability that is shared is accountability that is absent. When two names carry the A, each assumes the other is covering it. Responsibility can and often should be shared; answering for the result cannot.
- Can the same person be both R and A?
- Yes, and it is common on small teams — the person doing the work also answers for it. The tool allows one letter per cell, so mark them A and make sure the row has an R somewhere, or accept an A-only row knowingly.
- Why is it warning me about too many Consulted?
- Consulted means someone must be asked before the work proceeds. Every C is a gate. When more than half the team is consulted on an activity, the activity will move at the speed of the slowest calendar. Most of those people only need to be Informed.
- Is my matrix saved?
- No — this tool holds it only while the page is open, so export the Excel file before you leave. If you want a register that survives a refresh, the RAID Log Builder keeps its contents in your browser.
Who is accountable is half the picture
The other half is what happens when things go wrong. The RAID Log Builder keeps the risks, issues and decisions against the same names.
