How it works
- 1List your milestones with a date each, or pull them from a schedule file — anything flagged as a milestone is picked up.
- 2Set a status per milestone. Complete, in progress, upcoming and at risk each get their own colour, and the track fills in up to the last completed point.
- 3Markers sit at their real dates. Where several fall close together, the labels are spaced apart automatically so they stay readable.
- 4Download as PNG to drop into a deck, or SVG if you want to restyle it afterwards.
Common questions
- How many milestones fit?
- Up to about a dozen reads well on a single slide. Past that the labels get tight — which is usually a sign the list has stopped being milestones and started being tasks.
- Why are two milestones not exactly at their dates?
- When dates cluster, markers would overlap and the labels would be unreadable. The labels are nudged apart to a minimum spacing, alternating above and below the line. The order is always true even where the exact spacing is not.
- Can I pull milestones out of my project file?
- Yes. Use "From a file" and any task flagged as a milestone becomes a point. Status is set from percent complete and the file’s data date, so anything unfinished and already past its date comes through as at risk.
- Is this the same as a Gantt chart?
- No, and that is the point. A Gantt shows durations and is aimed at the people doing the work. A roadmap shows dates and is aimed at people who only need to know when things land.
Milestone dates that update themselves
PlanView reads the milestone dates out of each new version of your plan and tracks how far each one has moved since the last update — so the roadmap tells you about slip, not just dates.
